Angela’s take

The trip I’d
tell a friend about.

This was a full city weekend, with a Broadway night, two very different skyline visits, and a birthday spent exploring. The little food stops mattered, too. Magnolia’s banana pudding, Chinatown dumplings, and a bagel on the last morning all made the notes. Next time, I’d leave more time for DUMBO and the Oculus.

Do it again

Top of the Rock, a Broadway evening, and plenty of small food stops along the way.

A note for next time

Give DUMBO and the Oculus more time, and plan a proper sit-down break between long walks.

The memory that stays

Celebrating Jake’s 14th with a whole New York weekend together.

5 days, from departure to home.
01Thursday, October 9, 2025An overnight in Houston before the flight
  • Drive to Houston and stay at Spark by Hilton Houston Bush before the early departure. We booked a room with two queen beds.
02Friday, October 10, 2025Arrive, explore Midtown, and see the skyline
  • Take the hotel shuttle to the airport, leaving the car at the hotel. Fly nonstop from Houston to LaGuardia, then take an Uber to Hotel Edison in Times Square and drop the bags before the afternoon check-in.
  • Walk through Times Square to Ellen’s Stardust Diner, then see Radio City Music Hall, stop at Magnolia Bakery for banana pudding and a vanilla cupcake, and explore Rockefeller Plaza. We also happened upon J. Lo filming a movie.
  • Head up to Top of the Rock. We loved it and had great weather for the views.
  • Continue along Fifth Avenue: St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trump Tower, the Louis Vuitton trunk facade, the Apple cube, and the Plaza Hotel.
  • See the outside of the New York Public Library after it had closed. Bryant Park was setting up its ice rink, so the food trucks we had hoped for were absent. Drinks at Bryant Park Grill gave our feet a welcome break.
  • Return to Times Square for shopping and dinner at Los Tacos No. 1. The line moved quickly, but there was no seating. Finish with the Hershey’s and M&M stores and Times Square after dark.
03Saturday, October 11, 2025Central Park, Brooklyn, and a Broadway night
  • Start with the two-hour Central Park bike tour booked through Unlimited Biking, from 10 a.m. to noon.
  • Take the subway to DUMBO and have lunch at Front Street Pizza. We wished we had more time here. Washington Street at Water Street is the bridge-framing photo stop from our notes.
  • Walk the Brooklyn Bridge toward Manhattan, finishing near City Hall Park. The notes list access from Tillary and Adams Streets or the Washington and Prospect Street underpass.
  • Take the afternoon Circle Line cruise to see the Statue of Liberty. Confirm the pier and boarding time on your own ticket; our notes are not a current departure guide.
  • Return toward Midtown by subway, with Salswee on the way, then change at the hotel for dinner.
  • Dinner at Becco was booked for 6:15 p.m., followed by The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre at 8 p.m. We planned to arrive at the theater around 7:40 p.m.
  • Finish with cheesecake at Junior’s. Original, blueberry, and brownie explosion were our top three.
04Sunday, October 12, 2025Happy 14th birthday, Jake!
  • Breakfast at Crave with our hotel voucher, then take the subway to Canal Street.
  • Explore Chinatown along Mott Street between Canal and Pell. The pork-and-chive dumplings at Tasty Dumplings were a favorite.
  • Continue into Little Italy, including Mulberry and Hester Streets, Ferrara Bakery & Café for cannoli, and shopping around Canal Street.
  • Return to Fifth Avenue for Abercrombie, Nike, the LEGO Store at Rockefeller Center, Studio 1A where TODAY is filmed, and FAO Schwarz.
  • Visit SUMMIT One Vanderbilt for the 5:30 p.m. booking, and see Grand Central Terminal. Check the current entrance instructions on your tickets.
  • Freshen up at the hotel, then walk to Hell’s Kitchen for dinner at 5 Napkin Burger and cookies next door at Schmackary’s.
  • Walk back toward Times Square. Serendipity was crowded, so we took frozen hot chocolate to go.
05Monday, October 13, 2025Lower Manhattan and the flight home
  • Leave the bags at the hotel and take the subway downtown. Breakfast at Liberty Bagels included a rainbow bagel with blueberry cream cheese that made our favorites list.
  • See the Charging Bull, Trinity Church and Alexander Hamilton’s grave, then Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange.
  • Visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum for the 10:30 a.m. reservation, including the memorial pools.
  • Explore the Oculus before taking the subway back to Times Square. We wished we had left more time for it.
  • Get a street-vendor hot dog, collect the bags, and take a taxi to Newark for the afternoon nonstop flight to Houston. Leave enough transfer time for your own departure.

Save yourself a little research

The notes
worth keeping.

Hotel Edison in Times Square was our base. Breakfast vouchers were included in our booking; check the terms of yours.

01

We wished we had more time in DUMBO and at the Oculus. Leave room around the big reservations.

02

Top of the Rock was a yes from us, with great weather on our visit. Our SUMMIT photos tell a different weather story, so think about visibility when planning skyline time.

03

Los Tacos No. 1 had a long but fast-moving line and no seating. Plan a separate chance to rest your feet.

04

Bryant Park’s food trucks were not there during ice-rink setup. We took a break at Bryant Park Grill instead.

05

We took frozen hot chocolate to go from crowded Serendipity. Look into reservations if sitting down is part of your plan.

06

Our flights used LaGuardia on arrival and Newark on departure. Plan each airport transfer separately.
